We have local and foreign workers working side by side in our factory for many years. In spite of the difference in language and culture, they have been working harmoniously. The foreign workers come from Indonesia, Nepal, Vietnam and Myanmar.
Two months ago, a Nepalese worker died in his sleep of heart failure. When the news got out, there was shock and sadness amongst the staff and workers in the factory. Whilst arrangement was being made to send the body back, many departments quickly organized emergency collection from their respective staff. Everybody contributed, some very generously. The foreign workers themselves set up their own collection. Despite their low income which they desperately need to send home to their families, many have contributed generously.
A few years ago, our Company set up a special fund called “Love Fund” to help any employee in times of need. A box is placed at the gate to enable all employees to make a daily contribution of any amount they wish. I was very touched to see the employees including the operators, readily contributing to the Fund every day. Some money was taken from this Fund for the deceased’s family, in addition to a contribution by the Company. This Fund has served the very purpose it was set up for.
It was indeed very heart-warming to see the show of compassion for a fellow worker in an adversity. This is truly an example of the best of them.
