Ah Gong was never quite a fan of the camera (as you can see here) and little of his emotion was ever captured on film.
Yet he embodied the true form of unconditional love: jumping between me and my mother’s unforgiving cane to shield me every time things got out of hand, giving up cigarettes when my childhood asthma picked up; all this while silently putting in whatever little money he had into my savings account to fund my education.
Months before I was born, he was seriously ill. Yet he told everyone that God had promised he would see this grandson.
He was the first to ever believe in me, even before he saw what I could do.
It’s been 11 years since you’ve been gone, Ah Gong, and I wish you could see how far I’ve come since 2003.
I like to think that I was your favourite grandson. I hope I’ve made you proud.
You are, and will always be, the best of me.
Happy Fathers’ Day. I love you and miss you so much.
